Installing a Socket and Light Switch

Recently, we had the pleasure of installing a decorative socket and light switch for a customer in Kings Sutton, Banbury. Here’s a breakdown of the 6 steps we took to ensure a perfect finish.

Step 1: Preparing the Area

Before we start any work, protecting your home is our priority. We lay down dust sheets to keep the space clean. Next, we consult with the customer to confirm the exact locations for the new socket and light switch. Once the placement is agreed upon, we mark the spots with a pencil for precision.

Step 2: Cutting the Outline

Using a multi-tool, we carefully cut the outline for the socket and light switch. This ensures we achieve a neat, professional cut without causing the surrounding plaster to crumble, helping to preserve the finish of your walls.

Step 3: Chasing the Wall

To make room for the cables, we use a wall chaser with a vacuum attachment to minimise dust. This tool cuts into the wall to create a channel deep enough for the cables, which will be encased in oval conduit. The vacuum attachment ensures that the dust is kept to a minimum, preventing mess throughout the property.

Step 4: Finishing the Chase

Next, we finish off the chase using an SDS drill to make sure the metal back boxes fit flush with the wall. This step is crucial for achieving a clean and seamless finish for the decorative socket and light switch.

Step 5: Routing the Cables

We then route the cables down the wall through the oval conduit, securing them neatly into the metal back boxes. This keeps the wiring safe, organised, and ready for termination.

Step 6: Installing and Testing

Finally, we securely install the decorative socket and light switch, ensuring all connections are tight and safe. Before we leave, we carry out thorough testing to ensure everything is working properly and meets safety standards. If needed, we can also apply filler to the wall for smaller jobs, leaving your space ready for the final touches.
