1) Electric Car Charger Installation in Banbury, Brackley and Surrounding Areas

I regularly see electric car charger installations where the charger itself looks neat, but the protection behind it has not been thought through properly. With EV chargers, the safety devices, certification and notifications are just as important as the charger on the wall.

I’m Luke from L J Mullan Electrical, a NAPIT registered electrician covering Banbury, Brackley and the surrounding areas. I install EV chargers for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and businesses, making sure the work is carried out correctly, certificated, and notified to the DNO and local authority where required.

A big part of my job is finding the most feasible way to install the charger. That might mean looking at a better cable route, an additional consumer unit, or a neater way of installing the charger so the job is safe, practical and easier for the customer.

2) EV charger installation done properly

Electric Car Charger Installation in Banbury, Brackley, Surrounding Areas needs more than simply fixing a charger to the wall and connecting a cable.

I’ve seen installations where large companies set up to specialise in car chargers, but the correct safety devices have not always been installed. This can include missing Type 2 surge protection, no 30mA double pole RCBO protection, poor electrical connections, or paperwork not being issued properly.

For a high-load installation like an EV charger, those details matter. I always aim to install car chargers and electric vehicle chargers to the correct regulations, with the right protection, certificates issued, and notification completed where required.

3) What’s involved when you book

You can email, message, WhatsApp or call me to arrange a free quotation.

I’ll attend your property for a free, no-obligation survey and go through the work in detail. I’ll look at the existing consumer unit, earthing arrangement, meter area, cable route and where you would like the EV charger installed.

I’ll then explain the best way of carrying out the work, including whether you need RCBO protection, surge protection, or an additional consumer unit. My aim is that you have a full understanding of the installation before anything is booked in.

No hidden costs will be added to your bill unless the work required changes. If it does, I’ll always discuss it with you first.

4) What others often get wrong

Some EV charger installs look tidy on the outside, but the important details are hidden in the electrical protection and paperwork.

Common problems I come across include:

  • Poor electrical connections
  • No paperwork issued after the installation
  • No DNO notification
  • No local authority notification where required
  • No 30mA double pole RCBO protection
  • No Type 2 surge protectio
  • Unsuitable or rushed cable routes

These are the details I check and discuss during the survey. If your existing consumer unit is not suitable, I’ll explain the options clearly rather than just forcing the installation to work.

5) Chargers I install and recommend

I usually recommend Hypervolt and Andersen EV chargers, as they are good options for many domestic installations.

I can also install other chargers depending on what the customer requires, including:

  • Ohme
  • Zappi
  • Pod Point
  • Hypervolt
  • Andersen

We can also provide the EV charger for you if required. Charger prices vary, which is why my starting installation price excludes the charger itself.

9) FAQ's

How much does EV charger installation cost?

EV charger installation starts from £650 + VAT, excluding the charger itself. The final price is confirmed after a free survey because cable routes, consumer unit requirements and charger models can vary.

Do you supply the EV charger?

Yes, I can provide the EV charger if required. I can also install customer-supplied chargers such as Hypervolt, Andersen, Ohme, Zappi and Pod Point.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most installations take between 3 and 8 hours. It depends on the cable route, charger position, existing consumer unit and whether extra protection or an additional consumer unit is needed.

Do you notify the DNO?

Yes, I complete DNO notification where required. I also issue the relevant electrical certification and complete local authority notification where applicable.

What protection does an EV charger need?

An EV charger needs suitable protection for the installation. I commonly install 30mA Type A double pole RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection where required.

Can you install a charger if my consumer unit is full?

Yes, this can often still be done. I may recommend an additional consumer unit or another suitable arrangement depending on the existing installation.
