I recently installed an EV charger for a customer where it was not practical to route the cable internally back to the main consumer unit. Instead, we installed an IP-rated external consumer unit next to the electrical meter, complete with double pole Type A RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection in line with current regulations. D-Line clips were then used externally to keep the cable routing neat against the brickwork and give the installation a clean finish.
Every EV charger installation is different, which is why we take the time to assess the property properly before quoting. Some installations are straightforward, while others require additional protection, alternative cable routes or external distribution equipment to ensure the installation is safe, compliant and visually tidy.
At L J Mullan Electrical, we carry out EV charger installations throughout Banbury, Brackley and surrounding areas. We provide a professional, friendly service and we will ensure to communicate well with you if you have any queries throughout the process.

Back to topOne of the most important parts of EV charger work is adapting the installation to suit the property properly, rather than simply taking the quickest route.
On a recent installation, feeding the charger directly back to the existing consumer unit internally would have caused unnecessary disruption inside the property. Instead, we installed an external IP-rated Fusebox consumer unit beside the electrical meter.
Inside the enclosure, we fitted double pole Type A RCBO protection alongside Type 2 surge protection to comply with current regulations. The external cable route was then clipped neatly using D-Line clips to ensure the finished installation looked tidy against the brickwork.
This approach allowed the installation to remain both compliant and visually neat without causing damage or disruption inside the customer’s home.

Different chargers suit different customers depending on the property, charging requirements and preferred features.
Some customers prefer the appearance of Andersen chargers, while others prioritise app control and smart charging functionality from brands such as Hypervolt or Ohme.
We are always happy to discuss the best option for your property and vehicle.
